LIMIT REACHED GUIDE

Codex Says "You've Hit Your Usage Limit"

Find the allowance that is exhausted, read its account-specific reset time, and choose only an option that your account shows.

Direct answer: Run /status in the Codex CLI, or open ChatGPT Settings → Usage. Check which counter is exhausted and note the reset time. You may need to wait. Depending on your account, the screen may also offer credits, an available reset, or an upgrade. This site cannot see your private usage.

Use this page when: Codex has already stopped a request or shows a limit-reached message. If you only need to inspect remaining usage, go to the usage reading guide; if the displayed time has passed without recovery, go to the reset-time guide.

The decision tree

For ChatGPT-plan Codex usage, see the official OpenAI pricing and usage documentation.

  1. Open the account source of truth. Run /status in Codex CLI, or open Settings → Usage in ChatGPT.
  2. Name the exhausted allowance. It may be a short session window or a weekly allowance. Do not assume they share one timer.
  3. Read the displayed reset time. The date and time belong to your account. There is no fixed universal quota or weekly time for this page to promise.
  4. If a reset time is shown, wait for that account-specific time and check the same counter again.
  5. If the product shows another option, use only the option visible in your account. Depending on account and plan, this can include buying credits or applying an available reset; the option is not universal.
  6. If no recovery occurs after the displayed time, confirm that you are checking the same allowance and read the reset-time explanation.

Which limit did you hit?

CHECKWHAT IT MEANSWHERE TO LOOK
Session or short windowShort-term subscription usage for an eligible account/status or Settings → Usage
Weekly allowanceA separate longer usage window that may have another reset time/status or Settings → Usage
API rate limitAPI-key usage and limits, separate from subscription Codex usageOpenAI API platform dashboard
Public/global resetA sourced event for a stated group, not private account proofCurrent public status and your usage screen

Keep subscription and API usage separate

If you signed in with a ChatGPT plan, check Codex or ChatGPT Settings → Usage for subscription limits. If you configured Codex with an API key, check the OpenAI API platform dashboard and its rate-limit context. API-key usage is separately billed, so a number in one dashboard cannot confirm the allowance in the other. Check the product and account setup that produced the message.

A public reset is not personal confirmation

This site tracks public reset announcements and reviewed events. A public event can have a stated scope, rollout delay, or eligibility condition. It does not prove that your account has recovered. For the latest public signal, visit the Codex reset status page, then verify your own account in Settings → Usage.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do when Codex says usage limit reached?

Run /status in Codex CLI or open Settings → Usage. Find the allowance at zero and read the reset time shown for your account. Then use only the options visible there.

Is a Codex subscription limit the same as an API rate limit?

No. Subscription Codex usage and API-key rate limits are separate. Check subscription usage in Codex or ChatGPT, and check API usage in the OpenAI API platform.

Does a public Codex reset fix my personal account?

Not necessarily. A public reset is an event for a stated eligible scope. It is not proof that every personal account has recovered. Check your own usage screen.
